{"id":1041,"date":"2018-09-02T14:52:24","date_gmt":"2018-09-02T14:52:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/driventosurvive.wordpress.com\/?p=885"},"modified":"2018-09-23T17:29:41","modified_gmt":"2018-09-23T21:29:41","slug":"the-rainbow-connection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.driventosurvive.org\/index.php\/2018\/09\/02\/the-rainbow-connection\/","title":{"rendered":"The rainbow connection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m taking a day off from being a breast cancer survivor.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>No, really, it&#8217;s true.\u00a0 I am using my soapbox for another crucial cause.\u00a0 It&#8217;s all about this.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cancer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>OK I was half-lying.\u00a0 I am talking about cancer in general.\u00a0 Believe me, I would really like to stop talking about cancer.\u00a0 But it&#8217;s insidious, and it is everywhere.\u00a0 Yesterday was a celebration of Aretha Franklin, who recently died of pancreatic cancer.\u00a0 And this morning, I watched in tears as John McCain was mourned after his final stand with brain cancer.\u00a0 I&#8217;m so tired of these stories.\u00a0 But it is a good reminder that ALL cancers matter, and we need more, more, more research into what makes cancer cells tick, and how we can effectively eradicate them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This brings me to my main point for today, which is this.\u00a0 September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness month.\u00a0 Unfortunately, Teal September does not get the attention that Pink October does, which is heart-breaking.\u00a0 Because this disease should be called the &#8220;ninja cancer&#8221;.\u00a0 There are no effective screening measures.\u00a0 The symptoms are all common complaints that could point to a whole host of ailments.\u00a0 And by the time that it is diagnosed, the disease is often advanced and requires aggressive treatment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The American Cancer Society estimates the following for 2018:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>About 22,240 women will receive a new diagnosis of ovarian cancer.<\/li>\n<li>About 14,070 women will die from ovarian cancer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ovarian cancer ranks fifth in cancer deaths among women, accounting for more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system. A woman&#8217;s risk of getting ovarian cancer during her lifetime is about 1 in 78. Her lifetime chance of dying from ovarian cancer is about 1 in 108.
